MGIMO Welcomes Delegation from Cambodian National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations

From February 18th till February 20th the delegation from the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relation of Cambodia (NIDIR) paid a working visit to MGIMO. The visiting delegation led by the Under Secretary of State of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, NIDIR President Dr. Chhiv Yiseang comprised academics from NIDIR’s Department of Public Relations and its Department of Training.

On February 18th the Cambodian guests were welcomed by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Artem Malgin, the Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, and the Director of the ASEAN Centre Victor Sumsky.

MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov shared MGIMO’s experience in academic cooperation with the ASEAN countries and underlined the importance of training professional diplomats for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as primary focus of both universities. The meeting was followed by the signing ceremony of a Memorandum on cooperation between MGIMO and NIDIR.

During the first working day at MGIMO, the Cambodian delegation held meetings with the Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Morozov and the Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, who told the guests how MGIMO builds partnerships with employers and participates in international university networks. The guests asked about MGIMO’s various training programs and its links with the Russian Foreign Ministry. At the end of the day the delegation went on a guided tour of the University and visited MGIMO History Museum and the Museum of Rare Books.

February 19, the NIDIR’s delegation attended a meeting with the Head of the Department of Diplomacy Dr. Alexander Panov, who told the guests about the department’s activities and programs to train specialists in international relations competent to work for the MFA, state bodies, and international organizations. He described the department’s history, its staff members and presented its published works.

The Cambodian guests also visited the Head of the Department of World Politics Dr. Marina Lebedeva, and the Head of the Department of French Language Dr. Mikhail Ogorodov. During the discussion MGIMO professors told about language training in the University.

Later that afternoon, the Executive Director of the University’s Endowment Fund Ms. Marina Petrova and the Director of MGIMO Alumni Association Mr. Igor Arseniev had a fruitful discussion with Cambodian delegates on university’s experience in cooperating with the business community and MGIMO alumni worldwide.

At the following meeting the Head of the Oriental Studies Department Dr. Dmitriy Streltsov told the NIDIR’s delegation about the Depratement’s research that covers various theoretical and practical problems of contemporary international relations in the Afro-Asian world. He also presented a wide range of research and educational innovations implemented by the Department.

On February 20, the Cambodian delegation visited to the Odintsovo Branch of MGIMO University. NIDIR President Dr. Chhiv Yiseang was received by the Odintsovo Brach Director Dr. Sergey Vasiliev, Deputy Director Elena Kozlovskaya, and Deputy Director on Language Training Dr. Irina Mazaeva. Dr. Sergey Vasiliev told the guests about the structure of the branch which includes MGIMO Gorchakov Lyceum and MGIMO College. He also told the guests about the International Summer School Program for foreign students. The members of the delegation also learned about MGIMO traditions of language training from Dr. Irina Mazaeva. The delegation went on a tour of the Campus. At the end of the meeting both sides agreed to develop cooperation further.
