The Centre was honoured to welcome the recently appointed Singaporean Ambassador to the Russian Federation, H.E. Ms Lim Kheng Hua, on September 20, 2012. Ms Lim met with Director Dr. Victor Sumsky, as well as two Singaporean students: Aaron Chee, a first-year Masters in Political Science (Politics and Economics of Eurasia) student at MGIMO, and Yoong Ren Yan, an undergraduate at Oxford University (UK) currently interning at the Centre.
Dr. Sumsky introduced the Ambassador to the aims and activities of the Centre, and discussed prospects for further collaboration between the Centre and Singapore/ASEAN, including future research projects and possible cultural exchanges. Also on the agenda were trade links between Russia and Singapore, as well as the recently concluded APEC Summit in Vladivostok, which the Ambassador attended. Dr. Sumsky also shared his experience in the Philippines with the Ambassador, who was previously Singapore’s Ambassador to the Philippines.
The Centre’s collection of Singapore-related materials was on display: including the Russian translation of the memoirs of Singapore’s first and longest-serving Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, dictionaries of Singlish (Singaporean colloquial English) and Straits Chinese phrases, as well as the volume “ASEAN-Russia: Foundations and Future Prospects”, a work co-edited by Dr. Sumsky and a product of the Centre’s cooperation with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore. The Ambassador kindly agreed to add to the collection.
The Centre looks forward to continuing its partnership with the representatives of the ASEAN member states to Russia.
