On the 24th of October, leaders of the Assembly of the Russian Nobility (ARN) Prince Grigory Gagarin and First Vice-Leader Alexander Korolev-Pereleshin visited the ASEAN Centre. They were accompanied by Dmitry Shebalin, a student of MGIMO who is also the vice-leader of the youth section of the Assembly.
The ARN is an all-Russian public organisation which brings together individuals belonging to the Russian nobility, and the descendants of Russian noble families. It pursues cultural and educational objectives, and actively engages with the government of the Russian Federation.
The visitors were welcomed by the Director of the ASEAN Centre Victor Sumsky; member of the Centre’s Executive Committee and Professor of Oriental Studies at MGIMO Nikolai Maletin; and Svet Zakharov, one of the most senior Russian journalists professionally focused on Southeast Asia.
Speaking about their work, the guests noted that members of their association lived all over the world, including Southeast Asia. As such, the ARN has some potential in the field of public diplomacy.
As you know, this year marks the 115th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Thailand. Since friendships were forged on both sides by the direct participation of monarchs and the aristocracy, the representatives of the ASEAN Centre and the ARN agreed to discuss possible joint efforts to commemorate this occasion.
