Conference dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Russia and Thailand Diplomatic Relations

Co-organized by MGIMO University (Russia) and Thammasat University (Thailand)

The year 2022 will mark a significant milestone for Russia and Thailand. More than a century and a quarter ago the two nations decided to get engaged in friendly relations. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries this relationship experienced ups and downs, but both countries never forgot what made their ties so special – mutual respect and equal treatment irrespective of historical and political circumstances.

To commemorate this important date, MGIMO University (Russia) and Thammasat University (Thailand) invite scholars from both countries to delve deeper into history of Russia-Thailand relations and assess the present state of their affairs from different perspectives: those of international relations (IR), history, politics, cultural, linguistic or multidisciplinary studies.

We invite submission concerning different aspects of relations between Russia and Thailand from a historical or contemporary point of view.

Topics might include (but are not limited to):

  • general and specific issues in Russia-Thailand relations, including understudied or not widely known moments in the history of our relations,
  • analysis of travelogues,
  • history of Russia Studies in Thailand and Thailand Studies in Russia,
  • Russia’s and Thailand’s perceptions of colonialism,
  • attempts to construct parallel history,
  • IR perspectives on Russia-Thailand relations,
  • the role of Russia and Thailand in developing relations between ASEAN and the EEU,
  • mutual perceptions at different stages of historical development,
  • current stage of political, economic and socio cultural developments in Russia-Thailand relations,
  • people-to-people connections as the drivers of Russia-Thailand relations,
  • Thailand in Soviet and Russian Area and Regional Studies,
  • Russia in Thailand’s historical and IR studies,
  • history and present day of Thai language studies in Russia and Russian language studies in Thailand,
  • ethno psychological gaps, differences and similarities between Russia and Thailand,
  • other issues relevant to the topic of the conference.

Guidelines for submissions:

Researchers are welcome to submit an abstract in English (no more than 300 words) together with max. 5 key words to both asean@inno.mgimo.ru and international.polsci.tu@gmail.com. Submissions should also include a title, the full name, affiliation and current position of the author. All abstracts will be reviewed within three weeks after the deadline. An abstract booklet will be prepared. All presenters will also receive a presentation certificate.

*A selection of papers might be considered for publication in a collective monograph.
