ASEAN Senior Officials Visit MGIMO

ASEAN Senior Officials visited MGIMO on Saturday 9 June 2012, as a part of the 9th Russia-ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting. MGIMO-University Vice-Rector for International Relations and Public Relations, Andrei Silantyev welcomed the guests, followed by ASEAN Centre Director, Victor Sumsky who informed the senior officials about the Center’s activities.

Russia-ASEAN Business Council Executive Director Victor Tarusin’s speech was a highlight of the event. He noted that the Council’s work is aimed at ensuring favorable conditions for Russian businesses in Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian countries’ businesses in Russia. In addition, the Council’s aim is to create a reliable resource of information for both Russian and Southeast Asian businesses. The Council works under the auspices of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

MGIMO professors and lecturers, Russian Academy of Science researchers as well as representatives of the Russian business community and general public participated in the meeting. After the meeting the Senior Officials visited the ASEAN Centre where they received copies of the publication “ASEAN-Russia: Foundations and Future Prospects” as a memento of their visit.

The book, published by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore is a result of the ASEAN Centre’s collaboration with the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS, following a conference that was co-organized by both centres in April 2011 and hosted by ISEAS. The papers that were presented at the conference, include perspectives from both Russian and ASEAN Member States. The editors are Victor Sumsky, Mark Hong (Singapore’s Ambassador to Russia in 1995-2002) and Amy Lugg (ISEAS).

The book highlights various aspects of Russia-Southeast Asia cooperation. It is devoted to the issues of politics and security, strategy and geopolitics, economic interaction and business partnership, particularities of bilateral relations, as well as cultural and educational cooperation.
