When the ASEAN Centre was officially opened in June 2010, Mr Djauhari Oratmangun, then-Director General for ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian MFA, was invited as a distinguished guest. Two years later, in October 2012, Mr Djauhari visited the Centre once again, this time in his capacity as the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia and Belarus.

Mr Djauhari and his party were welcomed by the experts of the Centre, a group of second-year students from the School of International Relations and their Indonesian language instructors. The guests and their hosts agreed to conduct their meeting in the native language of the Ambassador.

Mr Djauhari shared his thoughts on the 2012 APEC Summit in which he took part, the dynamics of Indonesia and ASEAN’s relations with Russia, the current situation in East Asia and ASEAN’s resulting priorities (including the possibility of reaching an agreement with China on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea).

Students Tatiana Andreeva (2nd year, IR), Roman Grishaev (2nd year, IR) and Galina Beltyukova (1st year graduate) took part in the exchange of views which followed. Among other issues, questions were raised about the availability of internship opportunities at Indonesian universities for MGIMO students. Also, the possibility of holding an international seminar on various aspects of the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership at MGIMO was discussed.
