Malaysian Delegation Visits MGIMO

On the 8th of October, a delegation from Malaysia visited the university. They were received by the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Public Relations Andrei Silantiev and Director of the ASEAN Centre Victor Sumsky.

Vice-Rector Silantiev and Dr. Sumsky answered several questions about the history and current state of the university, the English-languge Master"s programmes offered to international students at MGIMO, and the priorities and future plans of the ASEAN Centre.

During the meeting, the possibility of joint research on Russia"s relations with ASEAN as a whole and individual member nations was discussed. A proposal to involve a Malaysian university in preparing and holding the 2nd Russia-ASEAN Youth Summit – tentatively scheduled for May 2014 – was also raised.

The Malaysian delegation, which is currently in Russia, consists of senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and leaders of Talent Corporation, an organisation set up in 2011 to identify talented young people, and help them acquire advanced knowledge and achieve their professional goals (especially in the leading sectors of the economy).

Being in Russia, the delegation had the opportunity to understand what life is like for the three thousand Malaysian students living and studying here. Another purpose of their visit was to identify areas of scientific knowledge and education, upon which Russia-Malaysian cooperation could be expanded in the foreseeable future. Hence, the delegation was interested in MGIMO – in opportunities for the exchange of students and faculty specialising in international relations between Malaysian universities and MGIMO.
