Trade and Economic Relations between Russia and Indonesia

Trade and Economic Relations between Russia and Indonesia

15.07.2013

Ms. Victoria Sabon defended her doctoral thesis entitled "The Development of Trade and Economic Relations between Russia and Indonesia: Substance and Prospects" at the Russian Peoples" Friendship University on 20 June 2013.

At present, the need to diversify and deepen trade and economic cooperation is especially relevant for both Russia and Indonesia. Indonesia is important to Russia not only as a partner on the world stage, but also as a country that plays a key role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Under the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership, a road map for economic cooperation has been agreed upon and will soon be implemented. In turn, Russia is important to Indonesia as a promising and reliable partner in the development of its high-tech and innovation economic sectors.

Over the past two decades, economic cooperation between Russia and Southeast Asia has lagged behind political cooperation. Now is a good time to close this gap. However, in order to enhance the effectiveness of trade and economic cooperation, a whole host of barriers need to be overcome. They include bureaucratic restrictions and the lack of information. Ms. Sabon"s research, which brings together significant, practical material and the results of surveys of Russian and Indonesian businessmen, sheds light on existing problems, and prospective directions for Russia-Indonesia economic relations.

The ASEAN Centre congratulates Victoria and wishes her continued success in her professional endeavours.
