On December 12 in the framework of the ASEAN Week the Conference “2018 in Review: Southeast Asian Regional and Country Developments” organized by the Scientific Students Community on Southeast Asia Studies with the support of the ASEAN Centre took place at MGIMO.
Experts and practitioners alongside with the students specializing on international relations studies in Asia attended the conference. The moderator of the first session Dr. Victor Sumsky, Centre’s Director in his welcoming speech stressed that the expiring year was memorable for events that made us to take a fresh look on ongoing processes in the Southeast Asian countries and in the region itself. The answers to the question what the future holds for Southeast Asia should be found in correlations between regional and global changes.
The following topics “ASEAN in the Foreign Policy of Japan under Prime-Minister Shinzo Abe” (Dr. Anna Kireeva, Associate professor at the Department of Oriental Studies), “Russia-ASEAN Cooperation in the Legal Sphere” (Ms. Vu Tkhu Cha Mi, Chief Advisor at the International Department of the Association of Lawyers of Russia), the dynamics of Russian relations with individual ASEAN Member States namely with Vietnam (Ms. Alexandra Saloid, MGIMO Student) and with Singapore (Mr. Anton Sapronov, MGIMO Student) were discussed at the first session. Dr. Ksenia Efremova, Associate professor at the Department of Oriental Studies focused her presentation on Myanmar internal policy on rohingya issue in 2018 and anti-Myanmar campaign initiated by the western news agencies.
Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, the Centre’s Senior Expert moderated the second session. The speakers shared their views on the results of the national parliamentarian elections (in Cambodia, Mr. Victor Borisenok, MGIMO Student) and presented their analysis on the prospects of the upcoming elections (in Thailand, Ms. Daria Borisova, MGIMO Student). Great interested was generated from the report made by Mr. Nikolay Perminov, student of the Diplomatic Academy on the Mohammad Mahathir’s victory in the Malaysian elections. The economic issues were discussed by MGIMO students Mr. Alexander Leonov (“ASEAN Digital Transformation in 2018”) and Mr. Sergey Plotnikov (“Developments in the Cross-border Cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia”).
Representatives from the ASEAN-Russia Business Council Mr. Danyar Akkaziev and Mr. Samat Satvoldinow were also actively engaged in the discussions.
