M.Fradkov: «Indonesia is a Special Partner of Russia in the Pacific Asia»

February 18th, MGIMO hosted a scientific and practical conference to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia.

The expert meeting was jointly organized by MGIMO’s ASEAN Center, the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISI) and the Embassy of Indonesia.

The audience was addressed by MGIMO Rector A.Torkunov, the Director of RISI M.Fradkov and the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia Mohamad Wahid Supriyadi. The speakers dealt with the whole spectrum of bilateral relations issues, from joint investments and technological exchanges to security cooperation, as well as countering cyber threats. M.Fradkov spoke on a number of topics he dealt with during his time working as Prime Minister and Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service. The Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia L.Vorobieva joined in the conversation by video-conference.

The conference consisted of three sessions. During the first, the sides discussed the prospects of the Russian-Indonesian strategic partnership. H.Viravan from the University of Indonesia, the Director of the ASEAN Center V.Sumsky, the Chairman of the Business Council for Cooperation with Indonesia M. Kuritsyn gave talks and made presentations. The Associate Professor of the Department of Oriental Studies, Deputy Dean of the School of International Relations and Leading Expert of the ASEAN Center E.Koldunova moderated the session.

The second session was devoted to Russian-Indonesian economic cooperation in the digital era. The founder of the company Bukalapak, Fajrin Rasyid, the Deputy Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation and Special Projects of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development P. Kalmychek, the representative of the Engineering Technologies Group A. Pronichkin spoke during the session, which was moderated by Prayoga Permana (University of Groningen).

During the third session, experts hashed out the challenges faced by multicultural societies in the era of new digital technologies. The session was moderated by E.Kukushkina, the Head of the Department of Philology of Southeast Asia, Korea and Mongolia, at Moscow State University. Ahmad Fakhrurrozi, University of Indonesia, E.Koldunova, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Russia Mohamad Wahid Supriyadi and other participants contributed presentations and comments to the work of the session.

The timing of the conference coincided with a unique photo exhibition by S.Kovalchuk called «Faces of Indonesia», which was set up in the atrium of the new building.
