South China Sea Dispute: Challenges and Threats

On June 20th, 2020 ASEAN Centre’s Senior Expert Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova participated in the online round-table “South China Sea Dispute: Challenges and Threats” organized by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Speakers discussed shift in the balance of power in the South China Sea as a challenge to the regional security (Professor Vladimir Kolotov, Saint-Petersburg State University), legal assessments of the creeping Chinese expansion in the South China Sea (Dr. Pavel Gudev, The Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences), post COVID-19 situation in ASEAN and its impact on the South China Sea dispute (Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, ASEAN Centre at MGIMO) the South-Pacific Region’s view of the South China Sea dispute (Professor Evgeny Kanaev, Higher School of Economics) and Vietnam’s policy in the South China Sea (Dr. Dmitry Mosyakov, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

The presentations were followed by a discussion on the current dynamics in the South China Sea dispute.
