On October 27-30 ASEAN Centre staff visited Yekaterinburg to attend the opening ceremony of the exhibition “In the Land of the Emerald Buddha” and to hold several working meetings with the faculty and administrative staff of the Ural Federal University.

The International Arts Centre “Glavny Prospect” in Yekaterinburg launched a new season of exhibitions on October 28th, with one of the key art projects being the exhibition “In the Land of the Emerald Buddha” by the Russian Academy of Arts with the support of the ASEAN Centre. The exhibition is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Russia-Thailand Diplomatic relations and prepared by curators Vladimir Anisimov and Mikhail Shishin. The exhibitions are also to be hosted afterwards in 17 cities and towns of Ural, Siberia and the Russian Far East, with Moscow State Museum of Oriental Art being the final destination of the project.

The opening remarks were given by Svetlana Uchaikina, Minister of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Oblast; Arcady Tchernetsky, First Vice-Chair of the Legislative Assembly of the Sverdlovsk Oblast; Jay Dharmadhikari, Minister-Chancellor of the Embassy of France in Russia, and others. Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, ASEAN Centre Acting Director in her speech stated that the exhibition gives the city dwellers a unique opportunity to “visit” Thailand with the help of the art works and to re-discover this wonderful country for themselves from a new angle. The exhibition consists of 100 art and craft works made during the 5-year long expeditions by Russian artists to Thailand.

Other projects of the new season of exhibitions at the International Arts Centre “Glavny Prospect” are the exposition of French artist, which covers the period XVII-XXI ss., an multimedia installation “Root” by a contemporary French artist Anne-Sophie Emard and the personal exhibition of a Russian artist Nikolai Blokhin, «NB. Nota Bene».

On November 29th ASEAN Centre staff paid a visit to Ural Federal University, and conducted working meetings with the Director of the Ural Humanitarian Institute, Elvira Symaniuk, and the Head of the School of International Relations, Victoria Beliayeva. The delegation also met the Head of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations Dr. Olga Porshneva, the Head of the Asian and African Studies Department Dr. Gulnara Valyakhmetova; as well as PhD students, lecturers, associate professors and professors of the mentioned departments, namely the founder of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations Prof. Valery Mikhailenko, Dr. Ekaterina Mikhailenko and Dr. Ksenia Muratshina, among others. The parties discussed the perspectives of cooperation, including the organization of joint academic conferences and round tables as well as internships, cultural events, publications, etc.
