Opening of Yury Gagarin's Monument in Jakarta


A grand ceremony of opening Yury Gagarin’s monument was held in a hybrid format on March 10, 2021 in Taman Mataram, Jakarta.

From the ASEAN Centre side, the event was attended by Director Dr. Victor Sumsky, Deputy Director Ms. Ekaterina Tronevskaya, Senior Expert Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova and Analyst Ms. Valeria Vershinina.

This special occasion is a part of the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of establishment of the diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia, which was commemorated in 2020. Russian Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobieva, Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region Anies Rasyid Baswedan, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Mahendra Siregar and Director General for American and European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Ngurah Swajaya attended the event. The Minister of the Government of Moscow, head of the Department of External Economic and International Relations of the city Sergey Cheremin the delivered guests of the event a video message.

Monuments and busts to Yuri Gagarin have also been erected in Singapore, Vietnam (Da Nang), Thailand (Bangkok) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). The project to install bronze statues of Yuri Gagarin in different countries of the world was initiated by the “Dialogue of Cultures” - United World charitable foundation in 2011. The geography of the monuments installation is constantly expanding.
