Commentary by Dr. Koldunova to Vietnamese Media

From November 29 till December 2 Nguyen Xuan Phuc, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam paid an official visit to Russia. On this occasion Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Acting Director of the ASEAN Centre, Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies gave an interview to Vietnamese media.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Russia-Vietnam Strategic Partnership and the 5th anniversary of the Vietnam-EAEU Free Trade Agreement. Vietnam was the first country to join this integration organization. In her interview to a Vietnamese newspaper titled “Thanh Nien”, Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova underlined that Russia-Vietnam relations are unique. The Vietnamese President visit to Russia reaffirms the high level of trust between the countries and the willingness of both sides to promote stable political relations. With regard to economic relations, Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova noted that despite the year of pandemic the Vietnam-EAEU FTA has contributed significantly to bilateral trade relations. Yet both sides should search for new ways to advance trade relations, especially in the investment and service sectors.

As for the Russia-ASEAN relations, in her interview to the newspaper “Dan Tri” Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova pointed out that in the context of China-US rivalry most of the Southeast Asian countries will have to choose sides. In this regard cooperation with Russia in the military, economic and political spheres is an important opportunity for small and middle powers to be able to manoeuvre.
