Conference “Southeast Asia and South Pacific: Actual Problems of Development”

On November 24-25 the Center for Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences held the conference “Southeast Asia and South Pacific: Actual Problems of Development”. Representatives from MGIMO University participated in the event.

On November 24 Dr. Elena Yakovleva, Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies made a presentation titled “Laos in a Changing World: the 11th Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party”.

On November 25 Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Acting Director of the ASEAN Centre, Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies, presented her paper titled “ASEAN and its Dialogue Partners: the Transformation of Relationships in New Regional and International Context” that was devoted to current state of ASEAN’s mechanism of dialogue partnership.

Mr. Nikita Kuklin, ASEAN Centre’s Expert shared his views on Indonesian politics with his presentation “Indonesia’s Regional Leadership Back in Shape: Myanmar Political Crisis and AUKUS Regional Debate”. He analyzed the evolution of Indonesia’s strategies aimed at strengthening its regional influence.

Dr. Ksenia Efremova, Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies, Research Fellow at the Centre for Comprehensive Chinese Studies and Regional Projects made an overview on Myanmar-China Relations from Aung San Suu Kyi to Min Aung Hlaing. She told the history of Myanmar-China Relations under the rule of the National League for Democracy and what has changed after the State Administrative Council headed by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing came to power.

The conference is annual and one of the top leading research events in Russia dedicated to political, economic, social and cultural trends in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Among the conference’s participants were prominent Russian experts in the Southeast Asian Studies from MGIMO, IAAS MSU, RUDN, the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences and from others.
