VII Guber Readings “Southeast Asia: Historical Past and Modern Reality”

On October 5-6, the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Moscow State University held the scientific conference titled the VII Guber Readings “Southeast Asia: Historical Past and Modern Reality”.

The MGIMO was represented by the Acting Director of the ASEAN Centre, Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Centre’s Expert Mr. Nikita Kuklin and Associate Professor at the Department of Asian and African Studies, Research Fellow at the Centre for Comprehensive Chinese Studies and Regional Projects Dr. Ksenia Efremova.

On October 5, Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova made a presentation on “New ASEAN Members: Twenty Years Later” at the session “Current Issues of Development of Southeast Asian Countries”. It was dedicated to the issue of ASEAN identity and relations between ASEAN members in a historic perspective. Dr. Ksenia Efremova gave an overview of present assessments of the current situation in Myanmar.

On October 6 during the 2nd working day of the session, Mr. Nikita Kuklin shared his views in his presentation “Antara Dua Karang: Indonesia’s Position on US-China Tensions in Southeast Asia”. He introduced the vision of Southeast Asian countries on the conflict between Washington and Beijing.

The Guber Readings are dedicated to the memory of a prominent Russian scholar, academic Alexander Guber, who was a founder of Russian science in the field of Southeast Asian studies. It is held once every two years to discuss the current trends in Southeast Asia.
