ASEAN Week: Round table “First Russian Consuls and Ambassadors in Southeast Asia”

On November 23, MGIMO hosted a round table “First Russian Consuls and Ambassadors in Southeast Asia”. The event was organized within the framework of the ASEAN Week, annual series of events held by ASEAN Centre and Southeast Asia Students’ Club of MGIMO. 

Dr. Andrey Baykov, MGIMO Vice-Rector for Science and Research addressed the event guests with welcoming remarks. He outlined the importance of the round-table discussion devoted to the first Russian consuls such as Peter Dobell in the Philippines, Modest Bakunin in Batavia, Indonesia and ambassadors of Russia in Southeast Asian countries, in particular Aleksander Olarovsky in Siam. Their life twists and turns, their efforts to develop the relations between Russia and Southeast Asian countries, their proficiency and enthusiasm had a great impact on Russia’s relations with the region.

Mr. Robert Ferrer, CDA of the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines, told about Peter Dobell’s biography and his role in Russia-Philippines relations. H.E. Dr. Kirill Barsky, Ambassador at Large and Head of the Department of Diplomacy, MGIMO University, spoke on Aleksander Olarovsky’s life episodes and professional activity. Dr. Victor Sumsky, Senior Expert of the ASEAN Centre, in his presentation outlined Modest Bakunin’s studies on Indonesia and his economic projects. The event discussion was attended by H.E. Sasiwat Wongsawat, Ambassador of Thailand to Russia, and representatives from the ASEAN countries’ Embassies in Moscow. Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Director of the ASEAN Centre, moderated the round table discussion.

Peter Dobell’s letters are available on the virtual exhibition organized by the ASEAN Centre. The exhibition was dedicated to the 45th anniversary of Russia-Philippines relation that was celebrated in 2021.

The round-table discussion was participated by students from MGIMO University, Higher School of Economics and Moscow State University.

ASEAN Week continues with the upcoming events that are scheduled on November 24-25, 2022.
