On April 12, MGIMO hosted the "Day of Malaysia", dedicated to the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Malaysia.

The lecture on “Malay Titles as a Reflection of Political System of Malaysia” by Dr. Viktor Pogadaev, a Visiting Expert of ASEAN Centre, gave a start to the “Day of Malaysia at MGIMO”. He is an author of a number of monographs dedicated to Malaysia and Brunei and regularly contributes to a famous Malaysian newspaper «The Straits Times». Dr. Victor Pogadaev spoke about a complicated system of titles that are used in the Malay language and that every specialist in Malaysia and Indonesia has to deal with in his or hers every day work. He noted that the strict Malay language etiquette has its roots in traditions and reflects deep respect for senior people which is wide spread in the Malaysian society.

The concluding part of the “Day of Malaysia” was a film screening of an adventure drama Edge of the World. The movie is devoted to James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak. Before watching the film Ms. Kira Tabunova, Expert of the ASEAN Centre, told the guests interesting details from the biography of James Brooke.
