ASEAN Academic Days 2021: Lecture by Dr. Natalia Gozheva


On December 7 in the framework of the “ASEAN Academic Days in MGIMO” another lecture was held. This time the guest speaker was Dr. Natalia Gozheva, Chief Researcher at the Department of Art of Peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia and Oceania at the State Museum of Oriental Art.

The lecture titled “From the “Crowned Buddha” Sculptures to the Gifts by a Malay Princess to Nikita Khrushchev” was devoted to the history of the museum’s Southeast Asian collection.
Dr. Natalia Gozheva highlighted the importance of the first contacts between the Russian imperial court and the kings of Thailand, covered the Eastern journey of Nicholas II and the King Chulalongkorn's visit to Russia. She also explained the procedure for replenishment of the museum’s collection in Soviet times. According to the speaker, most of the exhibits were donated to the museum by the state representatives during their visits to Russia. Temporary exhibitions and exchanges with the foreign partner museums also played an important part in the replenishment of the collection.

Dr. Natalia Gozheva is one of the most prominent experts in culture and art of peoples of Southeast Asia, an expert at the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for the cultural heritage in Southeast Asia. At the State Museum of Oriental Art Dr. Natalia Gozheva works as curator of the exhibitions dedicated to the Southeast Asian, Japanese and Korean Art (with more than 100 items in overall), and is responsible for the replenishment of the museum’s collection. She also oversaw and participated in more than 50 exhibitions. Dr. Natalia Gozheva regularly participates in research conferences, and gives public lectures on Southeast Asian Art.
